Chinese Teacher 6
Teacher 6 is new to teaching, with just 6 months experience. She joined this profession for the flexibility in working hours.
She was trained at Beijing Foreign Studies University. Her studies focused on teaching spoken Chinese, teaching grammar, vocabulary teaching and oral teaching, as well as teaching Chinese characters. Language teaching is characterised as “Northern Chinese culture”. Most of the lessons are conducted entirely in Chinese – English is rarely used.
During her training, one-third of programs were dedicated to “simulation practice”, teaching lesson plans were 100 minutes long, and hours of standard drills were conducted for different teaching objectives.
Teacher 6’s training emphasised teaching students to learn to spell the alphabet, and then, through the use of set dialogues in different scenarios, speaking practice. She was taught to “bring out the syntax teaching points” and reinforces the learning content through mechanical exercises.
Teacher 6 believes that foreign language training is not only important, but also the key to the development of China’s foreign exchange. However, due to the termination of the HanBan certification for foreign language teachers a large number of non-professional training institutions have stepped in to “reap profits”. The foreign language training offered by these private companies is “not professional”, and has led to an undermining of the quality of Chinese teaching.
It is hoped that Beijing Foreign Studies University and Hanban will join together to foster foreign language education professionals, and issue certificates to obtain international recognition.
